The Las Vegas Aces delivered an impressive performance today, shooting 56% from the field and dishing out 32 assists to secure a 97-79 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. The Aces dominated the first half, scoring 51 points and never looking back.
“We had a strong showing on the defensive end,” said A’ja Wilson. “That’s crucial for us because it’s been an area of struggle in the past. Our defense led to open looks and easy rhythm shots on offense. We took what the defense gave us and built from there.”
Jackie Young made a triumphant return to the lineup after sitting out Friday’s game against the Atlanta Dream due to fatigue from the Olympics. Young recorded a double-double with 14 assists and 11 points, showcasing her playmaking ability.
“I feel good and I’m excited to be back on the court,” Young said. “I hate missing games, but we got the win today, and that’s all that matters.”
A’ja Wilson was unstoppable, leading the team with 41 points and 17 rebounds, marking her third game with over 40 points this season. Kelsey Plum added 16 points and five assists, while Tiffany Hayes contributed 11 points off the bench.
“I’m honestly so grateful that my offseason preparation is paying off now,” Wilson said. “It’s all coming together, and I’m really proud of that.”
The Aces dominated the rebounding battle, outboarding Phoenix by 11, and forced the Mercury into 15 turnovers.
“That’s two really strong defensive efforts in a row for us,” said Aces coach Becky Hammon. “We know we can make shots, but it’s our defense that needs to travel with us. Our defense has to give us the chance to win games, and the team’s focus has been great these last two games.”
With the win, the Aces improve to 20-12 on the season, securing back-to-back victories for the first time since mid-July. They now hold a two-game lead over the Seattle Storm for the No. 4 seed in the upcoming WNBA Playoffs.
Las Vegas will host the Chicago Sky at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena.
